How are Senators selected?

If you are a customer of Salix Homes you could apply to be a Senator when a vacancy arises. Neighbourhood Senators are recruited by an application and interview process conducted by a group of customers who are not involved with the Senate. Preference is given to applicants who live in the neighbourhood in the first instance, if no applications are received then applications will be accepted from all customers and preference may be given to applicants who live in the closest vicinity of the neighbourhood where there is a vacancy.

Panel Senators are appointed to represent the panel through a selection process. The prospective Senators would need to address the panel explaining why they should be selected as a Senator. The panel members will hold a secret ballot and the member who secures the most votes will be selected to represent the panel on the Senate.

How long is a term of office as a Senator?

Senators will serve a term of office for three years after which they will be required to step down. The stepping down Senator can apply to be considered for the position again but their application will be considered alongside other customers who may chose to apply for the position.

Senators were appointed at the same time; therefore, a rolling programme of stepping down will be introduced in year three. Should a Senator step down prior to their assigned step down requirement they will be replaced using their appointment method, for example if a Neighbourhood Senator steps down they would be replaced following a recruitment drive to replace them.
