What is Domestic Abuse

The Home Office defines Domestic Abuse as:
"Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or who have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality".
Abuse can be carried out by men against women, women against men, within same sex relationships and by family members. It can affect anyone no matter their social group, age, ethnic origin or sexuality. It can be from a present or ex-partner.

Are you a victim?
Domestic Abuse is all too often a hidden crime that goes unreported, yet it accounts for a quarter of all violent crimes. For example, women experience on average 35 incidents before
asking for help. This may be because sometimes it's difficult to know if you are a victim. Do any of the following sound familiar?

  • Does your partner threaten you or your children?
  • Are you constantly degraded, picked on and made to feel stupid?
  • Are you not allowed to have contact with your friends and family?
  •  Does your partner constantly check where you have been, how much you spend, who you speak to?
  • Do you fear your partner?

How can we help?

Salix Homes have a zero tolerance policy towards perpetrators of domestic abuse and are committed to helping anyone threatened with or suffering domestic abuse. The safety of the
victim is our primary concern at all times. We will take action and assist survivors but only with their consent; we will not insist on evidence of abuse, although some form of evidence will be required if legal action is taken. Furthermore we will not judge. We want you to feel that your home is a safe place to live.

Confidentiality is ensured at all times. If we are contacted by individuals or other organisations about your circumstances details will not be given out without your consent. Our Safer Neighbourhoods Team is available 24 hours a day to offer support and advice. We will do this by;

  • Making a referral to other statutory and voluntary organisations that can assist you and give you additional support
  • Providing you with advice on the rights you have in your own home and refer you to specialist officers if legal action is required
  • Providing you with information and translation services if English is not your first language or you prefer to have information in a different format such as Braille, audio tape
  • Making you and your home more secure by providing additional security e.g. lighting, cameras, fencing, panic alarms and mobile telephones for emergency calls
  • Providing you with advice and support throughout any legal action
  • Working closely with the council's Housing Options Team and other teams within Salix Homes to secure alternative accommodation
  • We can also provide same sex interviews if you would prefer.

REMEMBER: We won't take any action unless you want us to. It is your life and you are in control.
