Equality Impact Assessment

What is an Equality Impact Assessment (EIA)?

Equality Impact Assessments originate from the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, the Disability Discrimination (Amendment) Act 2005 as well as the Equality Standard for Local Government (ESLG), all of which place obligations on public sector organisations to carry out impact assessments.

An EIA is the thorough and systematic analysis of a proposed or existing policy, procedure or function in order to determine what effects or likely effects it will have on different groups in the community.   EIAs help to anticipate and identify the consequences of policies and practices on target groups making sure that, as far as possible, any negative consequences are eliminated or minimised and opportunities for promoting equality are maximised.
