Salix Homes. Releasing the potential

Beechfarm Community Garden

Beechfarm residents association wanted to turn a piece of waste land on their estate in to a community garden for all the people to be able to use.  They entered into a competition with Granada TV and won the £50,000 prize.

The Association officially opened there community garden on Kinsley Rd, on Saturday 23rd February 2008.

After appearing on Granada Reports back in November 2006 and going head to head with other community events in the North West, the public voted for Beechfarm to scoop the £50,000 prize to turn a piece of waste land into the community garden

Groundwork UK worked with the Tenants association to turn the land into a place of tranquillity where the community can relax and pass the time of day away.

Following the sad death of Margaret Gallagher, the associations long term secretary and stalwart campaigner for a better estate, the association requested that the garden be named in her memory, “Margarets Garden”.   Frank Whittaker, Chair of the association said, “This garden will help to restore a sense of pride in the community and residents will be able to use the park and get to know and enjoy each others company.  This garden demonstrates the commitment of local people to improve Beechfarm for now and future generations”.
