Salix Homes. Releasing the potential

Kersal and Riverside Clean up and Planting Day

The usually tranquil riverside setting at Rushley Avenue on the Lower Kersal Estate burst into colour and activity on Wednesday 8 April 09 as people descended on the area for a morning of Easter half term fun as part of our WIN Days activity.

The event, initiated by New Deal for Communities (NDC) officer Caroline Allport and delivered in partnership with Salix Homes and a host of other organisations involved clearing, improving access and planting up a patch of land between Rushley Avenue and the River Irwell.

This activity was used as a focus for an event day designed to increase community cohesion, improve a piece of derelict land as well as increase the sense of local ownership of an important piece of green space. On the day, there was Easter egg painting, picture compactions, Kids' face painting and tree planting activities to keep everyone entertained.

Mark Heys and Jean Steel judging Salix Homes and NDC partners from Salford Council, Urban Vision, Lower Kersal Centre and Local Residents groups to deliver the event. Contractors Caseys contributed stones for a new piece of pathway to allow easier access onto the riverbank and the Central Salford URC together with Salford City Council's Green Team helped to clear the area and provide trees for planting prior to the event.

The local community were fully involved in planning, publicising and helping out on the day which ensured an excellent turn out, no doubt helped by a spell of sunny weather in an otherwise gloomy week!

The event proved to be enormously successful with overwhelmingly positive feedback from residents and officers alike. Thanks to these efforts an unsightly, misused area has been transformed into beautiful resource for the local community.
