Youthbuild laying the foundations for success

The beginning of March saw Hazel Blears launch an innovative new project that is building a better future for disadvantaged young people in Salford while helping to address labour shortages in the construction industry – the first of its kind to be launched in England.
The Salford Youthbuild project will work with young people aged 16-21 years to secure sustainable employment in the construction industry. Through individually tailored training courses, the project will work with the area’s most prominent building contractors to provide work placements and eventual employment opportunities.
Working closely with the NCH Salford Assisted Families Project (Assfam), the project will aim to reduce anti-social behaviour, encourage young people into training and employment opportunities and create positive outcomes for the young people and their communities.
So far, Salix Homes has played its part by allocating 15 empty properties to Cruden Construction for renovation under the scheme. We are also assiting NCH to find suitable premises in which to undertake the initial training programme.
Tony Smith, Principal Officer for housing market renewal commented: “This project is a geat way to introduce young people from challenging backgrounds into the world of work which gives them new and exciting opportunities. We’re delighted to be part of the first scheme of its kind in the country and we are looking forward to working with the individuals to give them a head start in the construction industry.”
